The department is well known in the field of Natural Products chemistry for the isolation, characterization by classical methods coupled with the application of instrumental techniques like 1H, 13C, MS besides other usual techniques. Has also worked in the areas of lignans, terpenoids, alkaloids (with special reference to quinazolins, glycosides, flavonoids, coumarins and steroids as bioactive molecules. The work includes modification of naturally occurring bioactive molecules and synthesis of compounds based on SAR studies. Major thrust area has been the chemistry of Indian Pipers, synthesis of bronchodilators, anti-inflammatory and anti cancer compounds based on the “:Leads” obtained from Natural Products.
Presently, the research group has been successful in getting high valued bioactive compounds from endophytes, synthesis of chalcone based anti-cancer compounds, SAR studies of combretastatin, synthesis of quinazolines as potent bronchodilator and oxytocic compounds, monoterpenoidl, sesquiterpenoids and their modified form as potential drugs.
Dr. K. L. Dhar is a renowned scientist of the country who worked with RRL Jammu as Scientist G. Under his supervision various research activities in Pharmaceutical Chemistry are being conducted on synthetic and semisynthetic drug analogues of anti-cancer; anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory drugs and also on molecular drug designing and development.
